    Calendar of Significant Dates and Events

    Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual observance that honours the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. It began in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. It is observed annually on November 20.

It was designated as a day of observance by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 and is observed annually on November 25.
