Recent Carson Graham graduate awarded Canada’s largest STEM scholarship
NORTH VANCOUVER - Cohen Cheetham has been selected to receive a $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study Science at the University of Victoria.
A graduate of Carson Graham Secondary in North Vancouver, Cheetham chose to study at the University of Victoria for its connection to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and the university-based Ocean Networks Canada, a world-leading ocean observing facility. He hopes to one day develop technology to prevent water pollution and improve access to clean water sources.
During his time in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Carson, Cheetham advocated for, then led, a tutoring program for students in Grades 8 to 12. He was also heavily involved in Model United Nations and started, then managed, intramural sports tournaments.
“We are proud to celebrate the continued success of Schulich Leader Scholarships, the premiere STEM scholarship program in Canada. This group of outstanding students will represent the best and brightest Canada has to offer and will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators,” said program founder Seymour Schulich.

He is a leader within his cohort; he is loved and respected by his peers and is a positive influence on class culture. He is a creative thinker and excellent problem solver. In the two years I have taught Cohen in IB Chemistry, he has demonstrated a deep understanding of high-level academic material and a thorough understanding of the scientific process. His independent experiment on the impacts of fertilizers was novel, well thought-out, and extremely well-written. He is the school’s nomination for the Schulich scholarship because of his passion and dedication to STEM and environmental issues.”
