The North Vancouver School District (NVSD) will host its first Climate Action and Sustainability Week, April 11 - 14, 2022.

In partnership with Ocean Wise and other community organizations, the school district is excited to offer NVSD K-12 students and staff a variety of learning activities, opportunities and resources that provide climate action education and champion sustainability to inspire action, both immediate and long term.

The shape of the week:

  • Monday, April 11: Virtual Kickoff Event
  • Tuesday, April 12: Take Action Art Contest
  • Wednesday, April 13: BeAware Fair
  • Thursday, April 14: Community Cleanup

Take Action Art Contest. Aspiring young artists were invited to create a piece of art that reflects the event's theme, “Taking Action for the Environment," and inspires others to take action. All entries will be displayed online starting April 12, with prizes awarded.

BeAware Fair. Students will meet with representatives of environmental organizations and learn how they can take action against climate change. Participating organizations include Metro Vancouver, Free the Fern, Georgia Strait Alliance, and many more.

Ocean Wise, with partners GreenLearning and TakingITGlobal, will launch Waves of Change, a new climate change education initiative at the BeAware Fair. The launch will kick-off with the debut of a new immersive 360 degree marine-themed dome from Ocean Wise.

Community Cleanup. Working with Ocean Wise and the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, participating schools will visit neighbouring parks, greenways and creeks, with the goal of cleaning up garbage, litter and items that do not belong in nature. The district-wide cleanup will see over 3,000 students from K-12 participating.

Quotes:

Sylvia Russell, Acting Superintendent, North Vancouver School District
“An integral component of the North Vancouver School District's 10-year strategic plan is Environmental Stewardship. To address environmental challenges, we must look at ways to provide climate action education and leadership opportunities to students and support initiatives that champion sustainability. Climate Action and Sustainability Week is a wonderful initiative that captures the spirit of how the school district is working to address environmental challenges."

Lasse Gustavsson, President and CEO, Ocean Wise

“Ocean Wise is on a mission to protect and restore the world's oceans. This first annual North Vancouver School District Climate Action and Sustainability Week is important. We know that fighting climate change and the destruction of nature must be a priority in Canada and around the world. And education plays a very important role. There are 1.8 billion young people in the world today, and they will lead the way. As a matter of fact, they already do. Some of the world's most influential environmentalists are teenagers."
