As part of our month long celebration of Pride at Ridgeway Elementary, we invited three performers from the Storytelling with Drag Queens Foundation to lead a lively and colourful story time session for students and their parents/guardians on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. The Foundation’s mandate is to “promote diversity and inclusion in literacy for children, teens, and adults”.
Audience members, both young and old, were absolutely captivated by the energy and enthusiasm of the event! It was an amazing opportunity to encourage our community to celebrate gender diversity and acceptance, and to underscore the importance of being your true, authentic self. At the same time, this event provided a platform to talk about the constraints of gender stereotypes and how important it is that we move beyond the strict adherence to prescribed gender roles. Through creativity, story, song and dance, the Drag Queen Story Telling Foundation helped to illuminate the importance of inclusion and to convey the message that it is always okay to celebrate your true colours!
