North Shore News: Kids Design Your Ads

June 10, 2026

By North Shore News Staff

One simple question is the driving force behind one of our favourite North Shore News annual traditions, the Kids Design Your Ads feature. What would happen if we let elementary school students draw all of the ads that went into the newspaper?

Every year we bring local businesses together with North Shore schools for an interesting exercise in community building and creative learning, allowing students to design ads to run in the paper.

This year we brought in creative kids from West Vancouver's Chartwell Elementary, École Pauline Johnson Elementary and Ridgeview Elementary as well as North Vancouver's École Boundary Elementary, Eastview Elementary, Lynnmour Xá7elcha Elementary and Seymour Heights Elementary.

Child-created poster depicting the front entrance of a school building labeled “North Vancouver School District.” The drawing shows double doors, windows, a bulletin board, a trash can, and planters with flowers and a small tree. A Canadian flag is displayed on the right side. Handwritten text in the top corner lists values: “Trust, Responsibility, Respect, Collaboration.” A green banner at the bottom includes the website (sd44.ca), social media handle (@nvsd44), and North Vancouver School District logo, with attribution to a Grade 5 student from Boundary Elementary.Child-drawn illustration of a library interior titled “Learning, Belonging, Everybody,” showing bookshelves, tables, chairs, windows, and a reading area. Includes a pride flag and multiple rooms across two levels. Bottom banner shows North Vancouver City Library branding, address, phone number, and student attribution from Lynnmour Elementary.

Child-created poster for North Vancouver Recreation & Culture featuring large green and blue “NVRC” lettering, paint splatters, Colourful child-drawn outdoor scene with a mountain bike rider on a wooden trail surrounded by trees, with ocean and mountains in the background. Includes “Save-On-Foods” branding, text promoting North Shore families shopping there, and a sign referencing years in Canada. Bottom banner shows awards and attribution to Grade 7 students from Eastview Elementary.

To help with the project, students in grades 4-7 were given a crash course in marketing and advertising by North Shore News staff members and then paired with local advertisers who provided the kids with creative briefs to get the ideas flowing.

Each advertiser picked winning entries to run in the North Shore News print edition, and all of the student designs are up on our website.
