Celebrating Yalda at Cleveland Elementary

By Myriam Dumont, Vice Principal, Cleveland Elementary

On Thursday, December 18, multiple classes at Cleveland Elementary came together to celebrate Shab-e-Yalda, also known as Yalda Night. This important tradition in Persian culture marks the winter solstice and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and the arrival of longer days. It is a time for family, friends, and storytelling.

Across many classrooms, parent volunteers generously shared presentations about Yalda, teaching students about its history and significance. They read stories, explained cultural traditions, and brought in fruits and sweets, which are symbols of health, happiness, and prosperity in Persian culture.

β€œI like having the food, especially lavashak. It's a bit sour and the watermelon was delicious," shared Sasha, a Grade 3 student. She added, β€œI celebrate Yalda at home. We have family and friends over, and I would probably say it is one of my favourite days of the year."

For Tida, also in Grade 3, Yalda is a time for friends, family, and special food. β€œI love Yalda because we get to celebrate with family and friends. Some of the food that we eat during Yalda is only eaten once a year, so it feels very special."

The event also provided an opportunity for students to connect with their heritage and identity. One parent shared a touching moment that happened after the celebration:

β€œAt home, we mainly speak English, and my children are not fluent in Farsi. However, that evening, my daughter came to me and said, 'Mommy, I would like to speak more Farsi with you.' That moment stood out to me. Having the opportunity to share her background and cultural heritage with her classmates seemed to spark a sense of curiosity and pride in her identity. We celebrate many Canadian traditions and holidays, but that day allowed her to also recognize and embrace her Persian roots. Being able to share that part of herself with her classmates was clearly meaningful to her."

This celebration reflects the North Vancouver School District's strategic goal of Welcoming and Inclusive Culture, which emphasizes creating learning environments where diversity is celebrated and every student feels respected and valued. By sharing traditions like Yalda, we foster understanding, build connections, and strengthen a sense of belonging for all students.

Thank you to all the volunteers and families who made this event possible.
