Handsworth Theatre & Dance Program
Raised $500
for
The Kelty Dennehy Foundation, Kelty Resource Center

During the 2013-2014 school year, the Handsworth students co-created an original play, The Shocking Tale of Kathryn Grey, about a young woman struggling with anxiety disorder. The play involved a cast and crew of 160+ students. It was written by a core group of students who had personal connections to the topic of mental health. The play-creating process provided a safe space for students to share their own personal stories with one another. The students were surprised to discover that 10-20% of youth today are struggling with various mental health concerns, which involves counselling and/or medication. As a small way to raise awareness on this topic, we fundraised $500 from our April 2014 performances at Centennial Theatre. We explained in our play program that we would donate funds to The Kelty Dennehy Foundation, which serves youth and mental health. On behalf of the “The Shocking Tale of Kathryn Grey” team, we at Handsworth thank the Kelty Resource Center for doing this very important work.
