In June 2022, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation gifted Seycove Secondary with an Indigenous place-based name, sΙΜyΙmΙtΙn . sΙΜyΙmΙtΙn was the name of the village located in this area that we now call Strathcona. sΙΜyΙmΙtΙn means βplace of good waterβ. The Tsleil-Waututh Peoples primarily used
ocean routes for transportation, using cedar canoes. Throughout
different seasons of the year, they would travel to different locations
throughout the inlet, hunting and harvesting in the bountiful coastal
waters and shores. Their safe journeys relied upon detailed knowledge
of the seasons, associated tides, weather patterns, and currents. βThe
Place of Good Waterβ offered travellers a safe haven from storms and
tides, and was teeming with ocean life and food. Welcome to sΙΜyΙmΙtΙn, where Seycove resides.
