"Place of Good Water"

In June 2022, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation gifted Seycove Secondary with an Indigenous place-based name, sə́yəmətən. sə́yəmətən was the name of the village located in this area that we now call Strathcona. sə́yəmətən means “place of good water”. The Tsleil-Waututh Peoples primarily used ocean routes for transportation, using cedar canoes. Throughout different seasons of the year, they would travel to different locations throughout the inlet, hunting and harvesting in the bountiful coastal waters and shores. Their safe journeys relied upon detailed knowledge of the seasons, associated tides, weather patterns, and currents. “The Place of Good Water” offered travellers a safe haven from storms and tides, and was teeming with ocean life and food. Welcome to sə́yəmətən, where Seycove resides.
Secondary Enhanced Programs & Academies Open House — January 14

Families with students in Grades 7 to 11 are invited to learn about the various enhanced programs and academies offered at secondary schools throughout the school district. The event will take place on Wednesday, January 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Carson Graham Secondary (2145 Jones Avenue).

Artists for Kids 2025 Fall Portfolio

Now available for acquisition and currently on display in the Gordon Smith Gallery lobby, is the recent publication of Lauren Brevner and James Harry's limited edition, Sínulhkay. The Artists for Kids Limited Edition Portfolio program funds gallery programs for young people, professional development for educators in the arts, artist residencies, art camps, scholarships, bursaries, and future acquisitions for the Artists for Kids and the Gordon Smith Gallery Permanent Collection. The Elementary Band & Strings Program is a unique instrumental music program that is distinctive to the NVSD. The program complements the BC Ministry of Education’s Arts Education curriculum and provides school-based instrumental instruction to students in the intermediate grades (Grades 5 – 7 for Band and Grades 4 – 7 for Strings).
