LANGUAGES
The Languages Department's main objectives are to encourage and support students in developing a positive attitude towards language learning, to make connections to other areas of study, and to develop skills necessary for study, work and leisure. The Languages Department aims to instill curiosity, interest, and enjoyment of other cultures and to show and appreciate diverse ways of living and viewing the world. This helps students explore their own cultural identity through the lens of other cultures to help them see the interconnectedness of the world.
Students will address the Big Ideas of the curriculum through the exploration of various situations such as participating in celebrations, travelling, talking about themselves, their daily routine/schedule, and about their extra-curricular activities. Vocabulary building will continue to be an important component of language acquisition at the grade 9 level. Students will continue to develop their use of past, present and future timeframes. Students will learn about holidays in France and the culture of various regions of France, including Paris. Formative and summative assessments will be based on the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Students will address the Big Ideas of the curriculum through the exploration of the following Essential Questions: What can we learn about our own country by studying other countries? What can we learn about a country/region by studying its architecture? How can we benefit from traveling within our own country? Why is it important to know about the contributions of the members of our country? How does food contribute to the development and transmission of culture? Students will expand on their vocabulary from previous years and use it to be able to communicate in multiple past tenses, the present tense, and the future tense. Formative and Summative Assessments will be based on the skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

What impact have the arts had on your life? Why is it important to plan ahead for the future? What do cultures have in common? How does social media impact our personal relationships? Students will expand on their vocabulary from previous years and use it to be able to communicate in multiple past, present, and future tenses. Formative and Summative Assessments will be based on the skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
Students will address the Big Ideas of the curriculum through the exploration of various situations such as the environment and technology in the future, travel, francophone countries in Africa, and French history. Students will use vocabulary to make word choices and adjust register to express intended meaning. Students will continue to expand their use of timeframes by learning multiple past, present and future tenses. Formative and summative assessments will be based on the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

AP French Language and Culture is equivalent to an intermediate level college course in French. Students cultivate their understanding of French language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and community, personal and public identity, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges. This course provides an opportunity for Windsor students to earn college/university credit and be exempt from an introductory college/university level course in French.
SPANISH 9 – 12
Students with a strong background or who are already fluent in Spanish should speak with their counsellor before selecting a course to ensure they choose the level that's right for them
Spanish 9 is an introductory course for students with limited or no background in the Spanish language. The goal of this course is to provide students with the foundation and skills needed to communicate effectively in the target language. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of reading, writing, listening and speaking activities while developing an appreciation for the Spanish-speaking world and its diverse cultures.
Spanish 10 provides students with the opportunity to continue expressing themselves more confidently in the Spanish language. Students will further develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills with growing fluency. They will express and reflect on a variety of experiences, perspectives and worldviews through the framework of culture.
The emphasis of Spanish 11 is on improving fluency, comprehension, and cultural awareness. Students will explore connections between language and culture, deepening their understanding of their own identity. They will continue developing their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, using an increasing range of complex vocabulary and sentence structures to express meaning.
Spanish 12 aims to develop the students' linguistic competence and intercultural understanding. In their final year of Spanish, students will refine their skills and use a wider range of increasingly complex vocabulary, sentence structures, and expressions for communication. Students are expected to interact with a degree of spontaneity and engage in interactions with growing fluency.
