Medical Labratory Assistant

​​What does a medical laboratory assistant do?

Medical Laboratory Assistants are responsible for the following:

  • ​perform ECG's (electrocardiograms)
  • load and operate lab testing equipment
  • operate and maintain instruments and equipment
  • collect blood (phlebotomy) and other biological samples
Medical Laboratory Assistants may work in the medical laboratories in hospitals, clinics, research facilities, post-secondary education institutions and government research laboratories.  Recommended characteristics include:
  • ability to perform fine motor skills
  • able to work well in stressful situations
  • excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • ability to work well as a team members
  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • good health
What do I need to start?

Program Specific:

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Grade 12 completion by intake date
  • English 12 with at B grade minimum
  • Biology 12 or Anatomy and Physiology 12 - with a C grade minimum
  • Certified 5-minute keyboard test with a minimum typing speed of 40 gross words per minute with a maximum of 5 errors (many online services offer this certification)
Upon Acceptance:
  • ​​Criminal Record Check (CRC)​

  • TB Screening:  Within six months of the start of the program, students must submit a negative TB skin test.  If the TB skill test is positive, a negative TB chest x-ray is required.

  • Immunization Records must be completed: Immunizations in the following are strongly recommended and in some case may be required for practicum placements:

    • ​​​​Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis Polio

    • Measles, Mumps & Rubella Varicella (Chicken pox) 

    • Hepatitis B Influenza (annually) 

    • COVID-19 Vaccination

When and where is the program offered?

The program takes place at ​Vancouver Community College (VCC) Broadway Campus.  6 months, full-time (9-4pm) and in-person.  They offer September and May intakes.

Please do not apply directly to VCC for this program. To be eligible for TUITION FREE programming, you must apply through the North Vancouver School District.
