​The Metal Fabricator Foundation program prepares students for a career dealing with the selection, layout, shearing, cutting, punching, drilling, forming, fitting and welding of steel plates and structural steel shapes into products for the forest, mining, construction, transportation and agricultural industries (BCIT) ​istockphoto-1226760249-612x612.jpg

​What does a metal fabricator do?

  • Works on metal-related aspects in projects involving the construction of bridges, buildings, hoppers, conveyors, cranes, heavy mining equipment, logging equipment, and ship parts and equipment, as well as many rapidly evolving industries such as aviation 
  • Metal Fabricators deal with the selection, layout, shearing, cutting (with a torch), drilling and welding of metal plates and structural steel shapes into products 
  • Work for sheet metal fabrication, welding shops, and ship building companies 

​What do I need to start?

  • Entering Grade 11 or Grade 12 
  • Good employability skills 
  • Strong interest in entering industry 
  • Good hand-eye coordination and physical condition 
  • Strong math skills are an asset 
  • English 12 and Math 10 are required 

​What are the benefits?

  • Tuition-free post-secondary apprenticeship training 
  • Up to 16 credits towards graduation 
  • Apprenticeship Technical Training Certification Level 1 
  • Student registered with SkilledTradesBC 

​When and where is the program offered?

  • ​23 weeks, full-time at BCIT (Burnaby Campus) 
  • Multiple intakes
