Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation

​​What are heavy mechanical trades? 

​The Heavy Mechanical Trades focus on machines that do the heavy work! Heavy Mechanical vehicles are essential in the construction, transportation, transit, mining, and forest industries.  The Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation program prepares students for entry level positions as apprentices in the four Heavy Mechanical Trades: Diesel Engine Mechanic (DEM); Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET); Truck and Transport Mechanic (TTM); Transport Trailer Technician (TTT).

  • Entering Grade 11 or Grade 12 
  • Good employability skills and a willingness to learn 
  • Parent/guardian permission 
  • Ability to travel throughout the Lower Mainland

​What are the benefits?

  • Tuition-free post-secondary apprenticeship training 
  • Up to 16 credits towards graduation 
  • Apprenticeship Technical Training Certification Level 1 
  • Student registered with SkilledTradesBC 

​When and where is the program offered? 

  • ​This program is offered through two institutions: BCIT and VCC 
  • BCIT: 36 weeks, full-time, in-person (Annacis Island Campus) 
  • BCIT Program Start Dates: Multiple Intakes
  • VCC: 36 weeks, full-time, in-person (Broadway Campus) 
  • VCC Program Start Dates: Multiple

  • Participate in a program interview
