Games have long played an important role in preserving and passing down Indigenous culture and
language, whether it is logical or physical. These games taught the youth cooperation, building
teamwork, and help develop important social skills. Indigenous people played three categories
of board games: games of chance, games of strategy, and lifestyle games. They helped build
mathematical skills in youth, such as pattern recognition, counting, problem-solving, and critical
thinking.
On May 16th, Windsor students had the honor of exploring several of these traditional games,
led by Brandi Price, an Indigenous support teacher from NVSD. We played a variety of games
that challenged our minds and built our teamwork.
