SKY ART - Sutherland Family of Schools Special Project

June 01, 2015

On Monday, June 15th students in Kindergarten through grade 12 from Queensbury, Brooksbank, Eastview, Ridgeway and Sutherland will gather on the grass field to create a giant sized representation of Squamish artist Rick Harry’s Sabretooth Tiger, representing the values of generosity, belonging, mastery and independence.  It includes the four Coast Salish eyes that watch over Sutherland students and bands around the edge that symbolize balance of mind, body and spirit.  Each student will represent a ‘dot’ of colour in this field sized artwork which will be filmed and photographed from 80-100’ above.  Our event will be opened with a blessing and welcome to traditional territories, and will feature a drumming presentation by Sutherland students.  This unique art experience will be facilitated by commissioned Oregon artist, Daniel Dancer and has been made possible through community donations of time, funding and materials, the support of our collective FOS PAC and staff, a Violence Prevention Grant, and an Aboriginal Education grant.

For this event, Queensbury students will be taking part in three walking field trips. On June 12th and 16th we will be walking to Sutherland for 10:00am assemblies, and on June 15th to Brooksbank, arriving between 10:00 and 10:15 to create the Sky Art.
