Artists for Kids is a unique, not-for-profit, self-sustaining art education program operated by the North Vancouver School District (NVSD) in British Columbia. In addition to receiving support through the NVSD, we rely on the generosity of our donors to offer a range of Artist and Educator-led in-school and community programs, as well as scholarships for post-secondary Arts Education.
Your donations help make quality art education accessible to all and ensure that we can continue creating life changing opportunities to children and youth.
The Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation for Young Artists
Supporting Artists for Kids’ future on an annual basis.
The Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation for Young Artists was founded in 2002 to establish an endowment fund, the interest from which would fund ongoing visual arts enrichment opportunities for the children of British Columbia by providing a steady base of operating support Artists for Kids, in perpetuity.
The endowment is held and managed by the Vancouver Foundation. The Foundation’s role has evolved to include the presentation of a diverse and accessible range of visual arts programming and the curation of high profile exhibitions at the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art. The Foundation is named after two champions of the arts and art education in Canada – Gordon A. Smith and his late wife, Marion.
The Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation for Young Artists is a registered charity. Donations to the Smith Foundation are eligible for a tax receipt. Artists for Kids staff and the Board of Directors of the Foundation are committed to ensuring that the intent and value of donor contributions are preserved in perpetuity. The Foundation’s Directors serve on a volunteer basis.
In the late 1980s, when schools began facing severe funding cutbacks and art education was treated as disposable, the founders of Artists For Kids were determined to find a way for students to continue receiving the high-caliber art education that had proven to be effective and inspiring. Needing a financial model that would be sustainable and support the educational objectives of Artists For Kids, a print program was developed with the help of Founding Artist Patrons, Gordon Smith, Jack Shadbolt, and Bill Reid.
Today, limited edition print runs are developed after AFK’s acquisition committee purchases a major work by a selected artist. That work then goes into a teaching collection at The Gordon Smith Gallery of Art and the artist in turn donates their time and talent to create an original print, photograph or sculpture. The collection has steadily grown into a significant art portfolio offering collectors a unique opportunity to support cultural growth in Vancouver’s communities.
Print sale proceeds go directly towards funding educational programs, art camps for teachers and students, and future acquisitions.
