Takao Tanabe

Takao Tanabe was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, in 1926. ​Tanabe studied the arts rigorously across a multitude of institutions, including ​the Winnipeg School of Art, the Brooklyn Museum Art School in New York, and the Central School of Arts in London, England. Tanabe additionally studied sumi-e and calligraphy at Tokyo University in Japan. Tanabe has experimented with a variety of styles throughout the course of his career, from ​landscapes to hard edged abstracts. Tanabe has been presented with numerous awards, including the position of Officer in the Order of Canada, the Order of British Columbia, and the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts. ​
