Ed Burtynsky was born in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1955 into a blue collar family of Ukranian heritage. After being introduced to photography at a young age, Burtynsky pursued a BAA in Photography and Media Studies from the Toronto Metropolitan University, and subsequently was awarded an Alumni Achievement Award and an Honorary Doctorate. Burtynsky founded Toronto Image Works in 1985, a studio space intended to help photographers bring their work to life. His work is showcased across Canada, and held as part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada.
