E.J. Hughes

​E.J. Hughes was born in North Vancouver in 1913, and had a remarkable career in the arts spanning 70 years. He began studying at the Vancouver School of Applied Art and Design, where he undertook murals and printmaking projects alongside fellow students, and continued making art after graduating. Following his grad​uation in 1933, Hughes joined the army and developed his skills as a war artist. ​Upon returning home, Hughes was awarded an inaugural Emily Carr Scholarship, and received the Order of Canada in 2001 for his outstanding work in capturing Canadian realism among other awards. Huges' work is displayed in galleries across Canada, with the largest collection being held at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
