UBC Summer Employment Hello,
I am one of the Volunteer Coordinators for Geering Up, which is a non-profit organization that is run by the Faculty of Applied Science at UBC. Geering Up has the mandate of promoting science, engineering and technology to youth across British Columbia.

I am connecting with you because Geering Up has some great summer opportunities that I think your students will be interested in.

Students currently in grades 10-12 can apply to volunteer as a Junior Instructor with us this summer. Volunteers help instructors deliver week-long science and engineering camps to kids on the UBC campus. This position is an excellent opportunity for your students to gain volunteering experience, develop their leadership, communication and organizational skills, and give back to their community.

During camps, experienced undergraduate UBC students run a dynamic mix of hands-on activities, demonstrations, tours, mentors, and design challenges. You can find more information on our website.

Geering Up has an exciting High School summer program for students in grades 7-12. Students will explore cutting-edge innovations and concepts in the STEM field through hands-on projects, discussions and lectures. They will learn from top UBC graduate and undergraduate students both in laboratory, classroom and real world settings. High school students in grades 10-12 have the option of participating in our overnight program, where they will live in first-year residence at UBC. It is an excellent way to experience what it is like to live and learn at University. More information can be found on our website.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

UBC Conference

Gr 8-12

The UBC Humanitarian Organization for Providing Empowerment, an on-campus group under the Alma Mater Society, will be hosting a FREE conference for high school students grades 8-12. As mental wellness is an important topic on campus, our conference will focus on mental wellness and media literacy and will feature keynote speakers such as Carol Todd, (mother of Amanda Todd), MLA Jane Thornthwaite, and Anita Roberts (founder of safeteen.ca).
On top of discussion about mental wellness we will also be providing two additional workshop options. One to graduating students in grade 12 to receive a free campus tour and guidelines on how to construct their upcoming first year course schedules as well as a workshop for grade 11 students on how to prepare for university applications in their twelfth grade year. These will be run by UBC Major Entrance Scholarship Winners, and Schulich Scholarship Awardees. There will also be university students who are trained as Peer Academic Coaches available for consultation.
We are emailing you to invite your students to take part in this exciting opportunity as many of them have taken part in our previous Mentorship program with great success!
