Letter to Capilano Families August 20 2020

August 28, 2020

Dear Families of Capilano,

As we approach the start of the school year, we would like to offer our thanks and appreciation to the Coast Salish people, specifically the Skwxwú7mesh Nation and Tsleil-Waututh Nation, whose unceded traditional territories Capilano resides upon. We hope families were able to find some rest and relaxation during the summer months, and that everyone is healthy and safe.

On Wednesday, Mr. Mark Pearmain (Superintendent of the North Vancouver School District), sent out a letter to families outlining the NVSD Back-to-School Plan: September 2020. Please review the information and documents found on this page, including the approved NVSD Stage 2 Restart Plan, Back-To-School September 2020 FAQs, and Elementary School Highlights.

This week has been a bit busy for school administration, as we have been involved in a number of meetings to review the protocols and key aspects of safe return (e.g. Health & Safety expectations, Instructional Frameworks related to our context, attention to Social Emotional Learning and Mental Health, etc.). At Capilano, we continue to work on  preparing for our return to school with an understanding that best practices continue to be refined as new information continues to come from the Public Health Officer, Ministry of Education, and NVSD.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience as we develop our plans for upcoming school year. Our planning will include determining start and end times for the school day, class assignments, and health and safety protocols specific to our school site. A more detailed email will be sent out next week (August 31- September 4) to families and posted on the school’s web site.

In order to assist us with our planning, we would ask that all families complete the survey shared in the Superintendent's August 26th letter to families.

We look forward to welcoming students, staff, and families back to school during the week of September 8th, and trust that we will have a positive and safe school year. We acknowledge that this year will look different than previous years, and we thank you in advance for helping to make it a successful year for everyone.

Yours truly,

Doug Beveridge (Principal) & Jeeniece Chand (Vice Principal)
