With an anticipated hot and dry summer season rapidly approaching, the North Vancouver RCMP, City and District Fire Services, and the North Vancouver School District are appealing to everyone to be extra vigilant when enjoying the outdoors due to the high risks associated with wildfire season.
"As always, we’re encouraging residents to enjoy their celebrations responsibly, especially during periods of extreme wildfire risk," said Cst. Mansoor Sahak, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP. "Our expectation is that everyone abides by Provincial and Federal laws, Municipal bylaws, and respecting the rules of good citizenry. This is especially true for ensuring that flammable materials are contained, managed and dealt with appropriately."
In the past, North Vancouver public safety agencies have been called to attend events that pose a community risk. With weather conditions changing frequently in the summer months, extra attentiveness is required to ensure North Vancouver’s public spaces are protected. "Currently, our North Shore fire danger rating is considered to be ‘Low’, but under no circumstances should anyone be lighting a fire—whether it’s a campfire or otherwise," said Conrad Breakey, Captain of Public Safety for District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services. "Fires can start easily, spread rapidly and be hard to control. Open burning is banned all year in the District and it’s paramount that people use extreme caution when engaging in activities, like barbequing, that could potentially risk starting a fire."
"We all have a proactive and protective part to play in maintaining our forests and public spaces," added North Vancouver City Fire Department Inspector Alan McGee. "A carelessly discarded cigarette can spark a fire that can quickly turn to a wildfire and easily spread from a park or trail to a North Vancouver neighbourhood. With the potential for long stretches of hot weather, extreme dry conditions, and the enforcement of fire bans, there is cause for concern. Together, we can significantly mitigate risk and keep our communities safe."
North Vancouver School District Superintendent Dr. Pius Ryan encourages families to talk with their kids about their summer plans, including how to be good and responsible neighbours and stewards of the community. "We all appreciate summer is an exciting time for milestones and social gatherings, but we’d like to remind students—and their families—to celebrate responsibly," he said.
Throughout the summer, North Vancouver RCMP officers will be taking a proactive approach to the enforcement of liquor, traffic violations and local bylaw violations.
