Community feedback

The Board of Education would like to extend appreciation to all those who provided feedback on the proposed calendar. Nearly 200 responses were received. Of these responses, two themes emerged: 1. the desire for winter break to be changed to December 18, 2017 to December 29, 2017, inclusive; and 2. the desire to move both the November 2017 Curriculum Implementation day and the February 2018 District-wide Professional Development Day to create four-day weekends. Both of these recommendations from the community were seriously considered by the Curriculum Committee.

The Curriculum Committee decided not to change the winter break for various reasons, including: the belief that having a winter break aligned with all of the other lower mainland school districts is incredibly beneficial for parents, staff and students; the recognition that having a winter break aligned with West Vancouver Schools enables local service providers to offer more spring break programs; and the understanding that the traditional formula used to determine winter breaks assigns the last Friday before Christmas as the last day of school before the break.

The Curriculum Committee also strongly considered moving the November 2017 Curriculum Implementation day to align with the Remembrance Day long weekend and the February 2018 District-wide Professional Development Day to align with the Family Day long weekend, creating two four-day weekends. However, for this school year it was decided not to do this in order to respect Remembrance Day by having school ceremonies as close to Remembrance Day as possible. The Curriculum Committee will look at the possibility of four-day weekends for future calendars.

Approved Amended 2016/17 School Calendar

At the Public Board Meeting on March 8, 2016, the Board of Education confirmed the amendment to the 2016/17 School Calendar, which adds one additional day (5-hours) of non-instructional time to the school year.  The date selected for the non-instructional day is Monday, November 14, 2016.  Students will not attend school on this day.  This additional non-instructional time is mandated by the Ministry of Education for collaborative teacher training specific to the introduction of the new BC K-12 Curriculum.  The 2016/17 minimum instructional hours required by the Ministry and identified in the School Calendar Regulation B.C. Reg. 314/12, were revised accordingly through amendment to the Regulation

Amended 2015/16 School Calendar

The North Vancouver School District 2015/16 School Calendar is amended, adding two days of non-instructional time to the current school year:

Monday, February 29, 2016Non-instructional day.  Schools are not in-session.
Friday, May 20, 2016Non-instructional day.  Schools are not in-session.

This change is made on the direction of the Ministry of Education, following the announcement in September 2015 that BC school districts must provide 10-hours of new non-instructional time for teachers within the existing 2015/16 school calendar.   The 10-hours are dedicated to targeted training to prepare teachers for BC’s new K-12 curriculum, which will be phased in over the next three years.

AMENDED APPROVED CALENDAR 2015/2016

To accommodate this additional non-instructional time, the Ministry of Education has amended School Calendar Regulation 314/12, which prescribes the number of hours of instruction that must be provided to students in each year, and the requirements to amend a school calendar.  For 2015/16, the minimum requirement for hours of student instruction is reduced by 10-hours to allow for the scheduling of 10-hours of teacher training.

Information regarding the calendar changes was provided to the North Vancouver Board of Education Trustees.  As reported to the Board, the Ministry of Education assigned responsibility for selection of the dates and format of the sessions jointly to the Superintendent of Schools and the President of the local Teachers’ Association.

More information on the new BC K-12 curriculum can be found here.
