News

2026 Community Report + 2026-27 NVSD wall calendar
This year, NVSD shares the Community Report in a digital format featuring student-written articles and student photography that offer a glimpse into learning across the school district. 

To complement the digital Community Report, NVSD introduces a wall calendar that highlights learning and teaching across schools throughout the year. Featuring student photography and writing from across the school district, the calendar offers families and community members a practical, everyday resource that also celebrates the many ways students learn, create, and grow. Pre-orders opened March 12, with printed copies available later in 2026 ahead of the 2026-27 school year.

Events

Ready, Set, Learn – Events run April 8 to May 19
Ready, Set, Learn events foster positive connections among families, schools and early learning community partners and support children as they prepare for their transition to Kindergarten.​ Families with children ages 3–5 are invited to attend the Ready, Set, Learn kickoff event on Wednesday, April 8 from 9:30–11:30 a.m. at the Education Services Centre (2121 Lonsdale Ave). Public Board Meeting – April 14
A Board of Education Public Board Meeting will take place on April 14 at 6:30 p.m. Please visit the Public Meetings section of the school district website for information on how you can participate and to review the meeting agenda and board package, which is posted the Thursday afternoon preceding the public meeting.

NVPAC mental health education presentation – April 22
Join the North Vancouver Parent Advisory Council (NVPAC) for Let’s Talk About Anxiety, an in-person mental health education presentation for parents, guardians, and caregivers, with guest speaker Suzanne Vardy, M.Ed., RCC-ACS. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, April 22 from 6:30–8 p.m. in the Sutherland Secondary library (1860 Sutherland Ave). Registration is required.

NVPAC anti-hate education presentation – April 29
Join NVPAC for Confronting and Preventing Hate, a virtual anti-hate education presentation for parents, guardians, and caregivers, led by the Canadian Anti-Hate Network. The presentation will take place online via MS Teams on Wednesday, April 29 from 6–8 p.m. Registration is required.

Cheakamus Centre open house – May 3
Cheakamus Centre invites families to an open house on Sunday, May 3 from 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Spend the day immersed in the land as you explore forest trails, connect with local community vendors, and experience the programs that make Cheakamus Centre a truly special place. Registrations

North Vancouver Online Learning – Online registration open
North Vancouver Online Learning (NVOL) provides engaging, accessible and interactive learning experiences for students. Registration is open until Friday, June 5 at 3 p.m. Enrolled students should engage with their courses before summer break by completing the activation assignments before June 19. Students who are active in their course will have one calendar year to complete it. Students can also choose to engage in their NVOL courses entirely remotely online, or in a blended model of online and in-person interactions at the NVOL Centre (3365 Mahon Ave).

Please visit the NVOL website to see full course offerings for Grades 8–12 in both English and French. The French Immersion online course offerings allow students the opportunity to meet the requirements of their Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires en Colombie-Britannique online through L' École Virtuelle de Vancouver nord.

Elementary Band and Strings – Late registration open
Elementary Band and Strings is open to students in Grades 5–7 for Band and Grades 4–7 for Strings. Our unique instrumental music program complements the Arts Education curriculum and provides school-based instrumental instruction in a supportive and fun learning environment. Late registration for the 2026-27 school year is open until Tuesday, September 29. Please visit the Elementary Band and Strings webpage for information, including program fees.

Academies — Late application period open
NVSD academies are designed to enhance the overall student experience by providing learning environments that concentrate on a focal skill set. The following academies will be offered during the 2026/27 school year: Artists for Kids Studio Art, Basketball, Dance, Digital Media, Digital Media Lite, Field Hockey, Hockey Skills, Rowing, Soccer and Volleyball.

The first-round application period closed on February 28. Applications received after March 1 may be placed on a waitlist. Final academy offerings are subject to sufficient enrolment. Please visit the Academies webpage to learn more.

Artists for Kids after school art classes – Registration open
Taught by art specialist teachers and assisted by secondary art students, Artists for Kids after school art classes provide students the opportunity to develop their artistic ability and foster positive attitudes towards the visual arts. Registration for spring classes is now open. Please visit the Artists for Kids website for more information and to register.

Artists for Kids summer day camps – Registration open
Artists for Kids is pleased to offer a variety of summer day camps. Campers will enjoy a week full of studio art activities including drawing, painting, printmaking and more! Camps are split into small cohorts with a BC certified art specialist teacher guiding the class. Please visit the Artists for Kids website for more information and to register.

NVRC Summer Camp Leader positions — April 7
North Vancouver Recreation & Culture (NVRC) is hiring Summer Camp Leaders and Head Summer Camp Leaders for summer 2026. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 7.

BCIT Burnaby Campus Welcome — April 8
The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) invites prospective students to a Burnaby Campus Welcome on Wednesday, April 8 from 2–6 p.m. Students can explore a selection of classrooms, labs, and learning spaces across campus; meet instructors; connect with current students; and find out how BCIT can help shape their future.

Artists for Kids Spring Portfolio — Releases April 10
Limited edition prints by Russna Kaur, Elizabeth McIntosh and Gathie Falk have been brought together in the Spring 2026 Portfolio to consider the intersections across generations through mentorship, influence, and time. Each limited edition in this release embodies a distinctive approach to making and examines the lived and inherited relationships that have helped shape it. Acquiring a print from this portfolio funds educational programs, artist residencies, art camps, scholarships, bursaries, and future acquisitions for Artists for Kids and the Gordon Smith Gallery Permanent Collection.

Coming up at the Gordon Smith Gallery
This spring, the Gordon Smith Gallery presents One Hundred Artists Deep, opening with a public reception on Friday, April 10, alongside family‑friendly Explore and Create Saturdays beginning April 11, and the new seniors program Art in Good Company, starting Thursday, April 23. On Saturday, May 2, the Art Education, for Life speaker series features designer Rebecca Baker‑Grenier, who will discuss Indigenous fashion, material practice, and intergenerational learning. Artificial intelligence (AI) and the future of work — April 15
North Vancouver City Library (NVCL) is hosting Artificial intelligence and the future of work, an online program for teens in Grades 10–12 and their parents or guardians on Wednesday, April 15 from 7–8:30 p.m. This virtual presentation explores how AI is already shaping careers, skills, and pathways into the workforce. Registration is required.

Stanley Park Earth Day event — April 18
Join the Stanley Park Ecology Society​​​​ on Saturday, April 18 from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. for a day of nature education and connection with local ecosystems in Stanley Park. Activities will include nature walks, interactive booths, and hands-on learning opportunities. Participation is free, registration is required.

Coming up at the North Vancouver District Public Library
The North Vancouver District Public Library (NVDPL) offers a variety of opportunities for children, youth and families, such as Early Readers Book Club: Princess in Black on Wednesday, April 15; Keeping Kids Safe Online, a virtual interactive workshop led by Tatyana Davies from Children of the Street on Thursday, April 23; and a Teen Film Festival on Saturday, April 25. 2026 BC Summer Games — Apply by June 7
Kelowna will host the BC Summer Games from July 22–26, 2026. Held biennially, the Games are open to youth aged 14–15 and offer a pivotal opportunity for athletic development in track and field. To participate, athletes must complete the Athlete Declaration Form by June 7. Please visit the BC Athletics website for more information.

BCIT preparation for health careers — Summer 2026
BCIT is offering two new Health Sciences preparation courses for current BC high school students starting July 2026. Healthcare Horizons, an online microcredential for Grades 10–12, introduces students to Canada’s healthcare system and explores a wide range of health career pathways, with an optional on-campus experience. Preparation for Nursing Education is a one-week, in-person course for students interested in pursuing a Nursing degree.​​
