In 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood (currently the Assembly of First Nations) called for the creation of a National Aboriginal Solidarity on June 21. However, it was not until 2009 that the Federal Government of Canada passed a motion in the House of Commons declaring June National Indigenous History Month. June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day
June 21 has been recognized annually since 1996 as National Aboriginal Peoples Day and changed to National Indigenous Peoples Day in 2017. June 21 marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, which holds significance for many Indigenous cultures.
