In 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood (currently the Assembly of First Nations) called for the creation of a National Aboriginal Solidarity on June 21. However, it was not until 2009 that the Federal Government of Canada passed a motion in the House of Commons declaring June National Indigenous History Month​. June 21 has been recognized annually since 1996 as National Aboriginal Peoples Day and changed to National Indigenous Peoples Day​ in 2017. June 21 marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, which holds significance for many Indigenous cultures.
