βAn advisory from the North Vancouver RCMP Youth Intervention Unit and the North Vancouver School District Recent media reports of youth who have been charged and found guilty of creating and/or sharing sexually explicit photos online serve as a reminder that under Canadian Criminal Law, sending, making, or having sexually explicit photos of a person who is under 18 years of age is illegal. Incidents of sexting--the creating, sending, or sharing of sexual images and/or videos with peers through electronic devices--are on the rise. Regrettably, the use of social media and mobile devices by young people has increased online sexual exploitation of youth by youth, often with distressing and even tragic outcomes.
