Open Heart, Open Mind

As a part of Eastview's School Plan, students and staff are building community and learning with an "Open Heart and Open Mind."  Staff recently participated in a powerful day of experiential learning with the support of our NVSD Indigenous Education Team and are now being challenged to create their own learning goals about what they will do with this knowledge going forward.  Students have also had their own opportunities to learn, share and lead throughout this first term and are continuing to move forward with sharing their knowledge with others.

Directly connecting with curriculum in various grade levels and with the First Peoples' Principles of Learning: learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential and relational (focussed on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and sense of place) two of our classes developed an action plan based around their work with the truth and what their next steps could be.

  • Grade 2s- Communities across Canada
  • Grade 3s- Indigenous Peoples
  • Grade 6s- Social Justice: global poverty and inequality issues
Working with I Love First Peoples, a registered Canadian charity to "empower Indigenous children and youth to succeed through education and the motivation to stay in school as well as providing a bridge for communities through practical projects that promote reconciliation and education" our students were engaged in connecting with students, their own age, in indigenous communities.

Divisions 2 and 7 worked together to create develop and promote their ideas, share their learning, and ask other classes to support them. The goal was to build gift-filled shoeboxes as a gesture of friendship and a way to actively engage in reconciliation.  Our school community quickly engaged with their ideas and dropped off various new items for children ages 3-16.  Our classes wrote letters of friendship, created bracelets, and packed individual shoeboxes with all kinds of fun treats for children of all ages.  Eastview created 57 boxes for students in indigenous communities in northern BC!  We are so proud of our students, staff and families for their spirit of generosity and for all of their donations.  Thank you all!
