Can students take more than one course in Summer Learning?

  •  No, NVS​​D Summer Learning offers one course (one instructional session) per day. 

How much does it cost to take a Summer Learning course?

Can a student who has already graduated from high school take a Summer Learning course?

  • No, students who have graduated as of July 1, 2025 are not eligible to take Summer Learning courses in B.C.  Additionally, students can NOT take Summer Learning if they turn 19 prior to July 1 of 2025.

Can a current grade 12 student enrol in Summer Learning course?

  • Most Grade 12s are graduating and do not want or need to enrol in Summer Leaning.  However, grade 12's CAN ENROL in Summer Learning in the July after their grade 12 year IF they (1) DO NOT turn 19 on or before July 1 of 2025, AND (2) have not graduated as of the end of the regular school year in June.

How does a current grade 12 student get a link to register for Summer Learning course?

  • The Summer Learning registration item is added through School Cash Online​ to NVSD44 students currently in grades 7 to 11 automatically.  It is not automatically added to grade 12s as most grade 12’s are not eligible to enrol in Summer Learning
  • ​For a grade 12 student to be approved and the registration item to be added to their Parent’s School Cash Online account, please ensure they meet the above criteria and then send an email to the summer@sd44.ca with the student’s full name, MYED pupil number, date of birth, and graduation status.  The Summer learning office will confirm all of the above in MYED.  If the student meets the above the student will be sent the link.  

Can International students enrol in Summer Learning?

  • ​Fee paying NVSD44 International students can enrol if they are willing to pay the 1600$ and they have permission from the International Office.
  • A common issue is extending the length of stay for the month of July in school (the conditions for travel for many of them are rigid and they are to return close to June 30)
  • Funding Eligible INVSD ​nternational students can enrol without payment. Documentation regarding residency and study permit status may be required
  • International Students from other districts can not enrol in NVSD Summer Learning.  Please check with your own school district for Summer Learning options.

Can students who are not SD44 students, or “Out of District“ students, enrol in NVSD44 Summer Learning?

  • ​Yes – under most circumstances they can enrol as long as there is space remaining in Summer Learning classes on May 15. 
  • Out of district Students in grade 7-11attending a MYED school (this is applicable to most students.​​)
    • ​can register online starting May 15 using the link that will appear on the website on that date
    • Registration for these students will be done through a NVAN school cash online guest account. (Note: it cannot be added to their own current school district School Cash Online account.)
    • For these students, there is no longer a need for additional documents as the Summer Office will confirm eligibility for Summer Learning through MYED once the student has been cross enrolled to NVSD44 Summer Learning​
  • ​Out of district students attending a home school that does not use MYED ( Brockton, Mulgrave, or Vancouver Waldorf Schools) must register in person at the Summer Office at 3365 Mahon with the following documents: Prefilled registration, technology agreement, PIC form, Proof of residency address, Proof of status in Canada for both student and parent (e.g. Passport). Registration is only permitted by the parent/legal guardian at our office starting May 15th at 10am, online registration is not permitted/accepted. 

How will a parent know if their child should enrol in the Grade 8/9 Literacy or the Numeracy program?

  • Literacy and Numeracy courses are designed for students who will benefit from increasing their competencies and knowledge in the subject matter by practicing the core skills in these areas of study.

  • Literacy and Numeracy courses are for students who have already taken Math 8 or 9 or English 8 or 9, but who need to further development with skills and curricular competencies before entering the next level.  These courses are not for grade 7 students who are wishing to "get ahead."


​​How do classes work?

How many classes can a student miss during the Summer Learning session?

  • Students must be punctual and attend class every day.
  • Unfortunately, the attendance policy is extremely rigid in Summer Learning as the time period of instruction is so short and intensive and there are minimum number of hours of instruction during the summer.
  • ​​If a student misses more than 2 days of Summer Learning for an excused OR unexcused reason, t​hey will be most likely be withdrawn from Summer learning.  This includes excused reasons such as ​medical plans, extra-curricular sport, work related plans, family plans, and all other reasons.

Can students audit a summer course?

  • No, students cannot audit courses. We encourage and support students who engage in the course and participate fully.

How do the Math and English Foundations courses work?

  • Students who register for Math 8 and 9 (Numeracy), or English 8 and 9 (Literacy) will be assessed on the first day of classes and then grouped based on skill level.

  • This provides the opportunity for direct, individualized learning, and allows the teacher to focus on gaps in learning and the needs for support as demonstrated through the assessments.

If my child takes a Foundations course are they guaranteed to pass?

  • Students who take Literacy or Numeracy 8 or 9 will be assessed accordingly and will earn a pass (meeting expectations) or a fail (not meeting expectations). The focus in the Foundations courses is on skill acquisition and refinement – not on grades.

Can I register my child for the Elementary Summer Learning program?

  • Parents cannot register their child directly for our Elementary Summer Learning program.

  • Our Elementary Summer Learning program is only offered to elementary students currently attending one our North Vancouver School District #44 elementary schools.

  • Eligible students are recommended for the Elementary Summer Learning program by their schools to the NVSD 44 Elementary School School Based Resource Team.  When a referral is approved then the student's school will consult with parents to determine placement in the program.

How do students know who their teacher will be?

  • Students will meet their teachers on the first day of classes. 

Communicating Student Learning

When will I receive my SL report card?

  • Final report cards will be published to MyEdBC parent portal the first work day after the last day of classes  For all students whose homeschool is not part of the North Vancouver School District #44, copies will also be mailed to their homeschool for filing.  Students who have a homeschool not in MyEd, arrangements can be made to provide the final Summary of Learning (report card).

  • Please refer to the Summer Learning calendar on the website for reporting dates.

How will parents know how their child is progressing in the summer course?

  • teachers will provide Learning Updates (interim reports) midway through the courses. For Foundations courses, a hard copy interim report will be sent home with the student.  For Full Credit and E Students, the Update will be published to the Myed Parent portal.r
