 What is ‘Student Council?’ 

 

 

Student Council is an organization conducted by students and supervised by adults. The purpose of Student Council is to act as the voice of the student body. They help share student ideas, interests, and concerns with the school wide community. 

 

The function of the student council is based upon parliamentary procedures. Ideas are presented, voted upon, and confirmed by the student body president. Any student interested in leadership, organizational behavior, event planning, or becoming more involved in the school is welcome to join.  

 

 

Why should you get involved? 


Student Council allows individuals to develop leadership skills through organizing and carrying out school activities, service projects and planning events that contribute to school spirit and community welfare. Such experiences will enhance their skills and provide for opportunities of advocacy on behalf of the student body.

How to join;

If you want to join Student Council, you can sign up at the end of April to run for positions, and elections will occur both at the beginning and end of May, depending on whether you are interested in the Executive or General Council respectfully. In order to run for the position you are interested in, you must build a campaign to promote yourself to the student body. If you acquire enough votes from the body, you’ll get the role!


How is the council structured? What are the roles? 

The Student council is composed of an Executive Assembly and a General Assembly.



What kind of time commitment is student council? 


The Executive Council will have two meetings every week, while the General Assembly will meet every two weeks. Additional meetings may be called for various reasons.​


 


Roles and responsibilities:

President 

  1. Chair all meetings of the Student Council according to the procedures agreed upon by Council  
  1. Be responsible for preparing the agenda for all Student Council Meetings  
  1. Appoint committees and serve as a support of all Student Council committees.  
  1. Meet with the Faculty Advisors regularly, and the Principal whenever necessary to discuss matters pertaining to student affairs  
  1. Enforce section 6.3  
  1. Represent the school in inter-school activities  
  1. Must have current knowledge of the Student Council finances  
  1. Perform all other duties that need to be performed by the President of Carson Graham Student Council  
  1. Create a list of all duties that are not included in the Constitution, and ensure his/her successor knows their new roles  
  1. Must adhere to the Carson Graham Code of Conduct or he/she will be asked to resign the position 
  1. Must be a full time student at Carson Graham in good standing  

Vice-President 

  1. Assume the responsibilities of the President in his/her absence  
  1. Assist the president in carrying out the duties of office  
  1. Assist with the running of Student Council meetings  
  1. Coordinate with the student council information centre  
  1. Perform all other duties of a Vice-President  
  1. Create a list of duties performed from the previous year, and ensure his/her successor understands and receives this list  
  1. Be a member of the District Council, and represent Carson Graham 
  1. Must adhere to the Carson Graham Code of Conduct or he/she will be asked to resign the position 
  1. Must be a full time student at Carson Graham in good standing  

Treasurer

  1. Keep an accurate record and account of all receipts and track the way money is spent in the Student Council. These records must be accurate with the Carson Graham Business Manager. He/she must also must monthly create a write up of all expenses used by the council.  
  1. Advise the council on all matters related to money, and ensure the council doesn’t spend more than they have.  
  1. Perform all duties incidental to this office including counting and submitting deposits to the Business Manager. 
  1. Perform all other duties as asked by faculty advisors to support other executives 
  1. Must create a list of responsibilities and tasks done throughout the year, and hand it down to his/ her successor  
  1. Must adhere to the Carson Graham Code of Conduct or he/she will be asked to resign the position 
  1. Must be a full time student at Carson Graham in good standing  

Secretary

  1. Keep an accurate journal of the proceedings at each meeting at the Student Council, and ensure that electronic copies of these or distributed promptly at Student Council Meetings  
  1. Keep a typed summary of all council Activities for the entire year and ensure that a copy is passed on to the incoming council.  
  1. Keep a typed record of all members attendance at all meetings, and all activities put on by the council.  
  1. Email the week’s meeting minutes to faculty advisors within three days 
  1. Be responsible for preparing all outgoing correspondence for the Student Council, filing one copy for further reference  
  1. Inform the Student Council of all correspondence and file all correspondence received 
  1. Be responsible for the upkeep of Student Council Files  
  1. Perform all other duties incidental to this office  
  1. Must adhere to the Carson Graham Code of Conduct or he/she will be asked to resign the position 
  1. Must be a full time student at Carson Graham in good standing  

Communication Coordinator 

  1. Arrange for publicity (morning announcements, posters in English, banners, flyers, social media platforms, etc.) for all school-based events sponsored by Student Council  
  1. Write monthly updates for the school newsletter about past and upcoming events or projects & send regular updates to Administrator in charge 
  1. Chair the Publicity Committee and hold the initial meeting within one week of school starting each fall  
  1. Ensure that the Publicity meets on a regular basis Create and run all Social Media sites, include the entire school through Social Media  
  1. Update the Student Council boards, and ensure that there is a picture of each Executive member with a small description of the Executive Member, and update the board at least once a month, including upcoming Student Council events 
  1. Deliver posters to faculty advisors at least 24 hours before council meetings 
  1. Approve and stamp all promotional posters  
  1. Must adhere to the Carson Graham Code of Conduct or he/she will be asked to resign the position 
  1. Must be a full time student at Carson Graham in good standing. 

Club Coordinator 

  1. Liaison to all school clubs  
  1. Organize Club Day at the beginning of Term 1 and Term 2 
  1. Maintain club information for all students  
  1. Perform all other duties to this office 
  1. Meet with club presidents once a term for updates and support  
  1. Must adhere to the Carson Graham Code of Conduct or he/she will be asked to resign the position 
  1. Must be a full time student at Carson Graham in good standing  

Grade Representatives (3 per grade) 

  1. Rotate through in presence during Executive meetings to provide grade-based feedback. 
  1. Represent grade to the Student Council. 
  1. Possess voting power in Student Council general meetings. 

Athletic Representative 

  1. Attend all scheduled Athletic Council Meetings 
  2. Represent the Student Council in extra-curricular activities 
  3. Report to student council, at least once per month, and let the student council know about activities that will affect the Council 
  4. Provide insight to the Athletic Council, from the students perspective 

International Student Representative 

  1. Represent the International Student Body to the Student Council.
  2. Possess voting power in Student Council general meetings.
  3. Representative is elected by the International Student Body only


Indigenous Student Representative 

  1. Represent the Indigenous Student Body to the Student Council.
  2. Possess voting power in Student Council general meetings.
  3. Representative is elected by the Indigenous Student Body only

Members at Large

  1. Participate actively in all student council activities  
  1. To help publicize and support the Communications Co-ordinators 
  1. Will not have voting privileges at council meetings but may participate in discussion.
