Cheakamus Centre is one of ten inaugural grant recipients from across Canada to receive $250,000 each through the Indigenous Innovation Initiative's Advancing Indigenous Gender Equality through Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship Program.
In collaboration with the Aboriginal Housing Management Association, British Columbia Institute of Technology, B Collective Homes, VanCity and others, Building a Greener Future Together is a high-performance buildings education project to address Indigenous gender inequalities in the green construction industry.
Through a combination of online and in-person teaching and learning, which incorporate Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing, and practical application of what is learned in the classroom, a team of students, educators, community and industry experts will transform one of Cheakamus Centre's circa 1960 cabins into a model for energy efficiency, while empowering and creating green career pathways for Indigenous women and 2SLGBTTQQIA+ people.
