Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGI)

Diversity is our strength in the North Vancouver School District. Our schools provide inclusive and welcoming environments for all.

The school district is committed to upholding and actively promoting the principles established by the B.C. Human Rights Code. With respect to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ students, families and staff.

SOGI-inclusive education includes policy, environments and teaching resources to help schools create safe, caring and inclusive learning environments regardless of an individual’s race, culture, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.

There is no “SOGI curriculum.” SOGI is one aspect of diversity embedded across a range of grades and subject areas.

SOGI 123 (link below) is a resource educators may use throughout the K-12 curriculum and school activities to explore and address:

  • Human rights
  • What it means to value diversity and respect differences
  • How to respond to discrimination
Teachers may also include discussions around the B.C. Human Rights Code, sexual orientation and gender identity.

North Vancouver School District Policy 412: Supporting Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Gender Expression and its administrative procedures outline our ongoing efforts to promote and support SOGI-inclusive education, including increasing awareness and representation, creating inclusive environments, and combating discrimination and harassment. This work is supported by provincial education partners; read their joint statement.
