Summer Learning
North Vancouver School District
Literacy 8/9

literacy-photo-2018.jpgLiteracy 8/9 is designed for students who meet the following criteria:

  • have taken English Language Arts 8 or 9, but have achieved less than 60%

  • have an incomplete bank of core skills and foundational knowledge

  • require additional teacher support and direct instruction in developing foundational skills and knowledge

Literacy 8/9 focuses on curricular and core competencies. Literacy 8/9 is NOT a review of English 8 or 9 and NOT a preview course. (Please note, ELL students are better placed in our ELL 8-11 course.)

The Literacy course is personalized, as it is tailored to students' individual needs, target students' gaps in learning, and provides extra support in developing reflective and actively engaged learners.

A student's final report card will indicate "Meeting Expectations" or "Not Yet Meeting Expectations".

Please note that in July 2020, all Foundations courses will be offered in a fully online or blended model, depending on recommendations from the Provincial Health Authority for social distancing.  All face-to-face sessions within a blended model will be scheduled at Carson Graham Secondary School, 2145 Jones Avenue, North Vancouver, BC.

  • Classes begin on Thursday, July 2 and conclude on Thursday, July 23, 2020.

  • Classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. daily.

  • Attendance is mandatory in all face-to-face and online sessions.

  • Grade 8 students register for Literacy 8 and Grade 9 students register for Literacy 9

Online registration for Foundations courses begins on May 1, 2020. Families are encouraged to register early, as space is limited and fills up quickly.
