Re: Self-Assessment of the Core Competencies
In addition to the information sent to families in April from our Superintendent, Mark Pearmain, we are happy to provide further information about accessing your child’s Self-Assessment of the Core Competencies.
The Core Competencies (Thinking, Communication and Personal/Social Responsibility) are a broad-based set of proficiencies that enable students to engage in deep and life-long learning (https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca). In July of 2016, the Provincial Student Progress Report Order was amended to include the requirement of an annual Summative Self-Assessment of student growth on the three Core Competencies.
Throughout this school year, students have identified and assessed their strengths and weaknesses in relation to the Core Competencies, set goals for growth, established a plan to reach their goals, and regularly assessed their progress. And throughout the month of May, students completed their Summative Self-Assessments in their period 1 classes.
You may wish to discuss the Self-Assessment process with your child by asking open-ended questions about their development in the Core Competencies. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child about “why” and “how” they generated their conclusions and how the evidence they chose supports their reflections. To assist parents, we have generated a series of question prompts on the Core Competencies (please see the attached documents).
Your child's Self-Assessment has been completed electronically and saved in their Portfolio on the NVSD Portal (www.sd44.ca) -> Portal -> Portfolio. Please ask your child to log in and share their reflection with you.
