Kindness and our Code of Conduct

November 22, 2019

Recently, in honour of World Kindness Day, we have been asking students to think about the way their words and actions can promote kindness. Our grade 7 announcers have been sharing kindness quotes from Amelia Earhart, George Elliston, Henry James and Scott Adams.

Our Code of Conduct is integrated into the work we do to promote kindness. The Code (Capilano R.O.C.K.S.) works best when everyone (students and adults alike) model the expected behaviours identified in the code (see below), model kind words and model kind actions. The Code of Conduct applies to everyone who come onto the school grounds or enters into the building.

  • R    Respectful - to oneself, other people and other things
  • O    Open-Minded - to views, values and traditions of others
  • C    Cooperative - working collaboratively with others
  • K    Kind - demonstrating empathy, respect and consideration
  • S    Safe - keeping oneself and others injury free

Please review the Capilano Code of Conduct with your child (available online or in your child's agenda) and discuss how this applies to students and adults alike. Some questions to assist in your home conversations may be:

  • What does this look like on the playground?
  • How can we demonstrate Capilano R.O.C.K.S. on the way to school?
  • How can I show kindness when doing athletic activities?
  • What does kindness look like in the classroom?

Thank you in advance for everyone who will engage in conversations about how we can ensure Capilano R.O.C.K.S. and how we can show kindness on a regular basis.

Yours truly,

Doug Beveridge

Principal

"No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves." ― Amelia Earhart
