Collaborative Problem Solving

February 17, 2019

Screen Shot 2019-02-17 at 4.11.54 PM.pngThe North Vancouver School District provides world-class instruction and a rich diversity of engaging programs to inspire success for every student and bring communities together to learn, share and grow.

We recognize that, from time to time, parents/guardians may have concerns about their child's educational program. Under the School Act, the delivery of classroom instruction and the assessment and evaluation of students is the responsibility of the teacher (School Act, Sec. 17(1)). In most cases, issues can be resolved by bringing your concern to the attention of the classroom teacher.

North Vancouver School District's shared values of Trust, Respect, Responsibility and Collaboration set the tone for how we relate to one another in pursuing common goals. We encourage parents/guardians to discuss their concerns at the earliest possible stage and as near to the source as possible. Through a collaborative approach, we strive to resolve issues and concerns in a private and respectful manner.

Policy 406: Resolving Concerns Regarding Personnel, Programs or Procedures (previously “Complaints Concerning Personnel, Programs or Procedures”) was revised by the Board of Education at the November 6, 2018 Public Board Meeting. The Administrative Procedures are still under review.

In the meantime, Parents/Guardians are asked to follow the steps below when addressing their concerns:

ProblemSolving1.pngDiscuss the concern privately with the classroom teacher. Teachers work hard to communicate with parents/guardians about their children. Concerns are often resolved at this step.
If not resolved:
ProblemSolving2a.pngDiscuss the concern privately with the school Principal. Principals work hard to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students and staff.

*At the secondary level, the concern should be discussed with the grade level administrator first, then with the Principal if not resolved.
If not resolved:
ProblemSolving3.pngMake an appointment to discuss the concern with the Director of Instruction responsible for your family of schools. Their contact information can be found on the District website, under Contact Us > District Directory. Scroll down to the Learning Services Department; the three directors are listed at the top along with the families of schools they are responsible for.
If not resolved:
ProblemSolving4.pngProvide your concern, in writing, to the Assistant Superintendent responsible for your family of schools. Their contact information can be found on the District website, under Contact Us > District Directory. Scroll down to the Superintendent's Office; the Assistant Superintendents are listed along with the families of schools they are responsible for.
If not resolved:
