ICBC - Think of Me

October 02, 2017

Screen Shot 2017-10-02 at 6.02.06 PM.pngOn Wednesday January 11, four students from Ms. Dale's class, three RCMP officers (two school liaison and one traffic safety), Carole Sartor (Safe Routes to Schools), Mr. MacLeod, Harvey Kooner (ICBC) and the NVD Bylaw officers supported students, parents and staff with encouraging and supporting safe passageways to Boundary. Boundary has been working with these various community partners for almost two years. This initiative began educating drivers and students on safe ways to access Boundary and encouraging students and parents to find alternate modes of transportation rather than driving. Understandably, it is not feasible for everyone to walk to Boundary, but finding a safe drop place a few blocks away reduces traffic around the school, allows children some fresh air and ultimately increases pedestrian safety around the school.

Throughout the initiative, students have rewarded positive behaviour such as crossing at the crosswalk, parking in designated parking areas, looking both ways when crossing a driveway and stopping at stop signs. The community partners have been working with drivers with the rules of the road and the various bylaws around the school. Coming up to the two year anniversary, infractions are starting to be given out to drivers that are not following the rules. On Wednesday, eight parking tickets and two traffic violations were issued. This is on top of the numerous warnings given to drivers that were unclear, unaware or just chose not to follow safe driving practice. This program will continue as we move into the future and citations will issued to those not following the rules.

Please think of the safety of your child, the other children, parents and staff of École Boundary Elementary School when coming and leaving the school.
