Dear Families,

Re: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – September 30, 2025

On Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to honour survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

As the North Vancouver School District community reflects on what truth, healing and reconciliation means in an ever-changing world, we are grateful to the host nations on whose traditional territory the school district is situated. A sense of belonging is strengthened through ongoing and growing relationships with the host nations, səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). Their generosity, wisdom, and contributions to schools continue to shape the way students understand the world, the history of this country, and the communities they are part of.

In this work, a strong, vibrant, and connected tapestry is being woven - one that acknowledges the past, lives meaningfully in the present, and looks with hope and responsibility to the future.

This journey is engaged with earnest hearts and open minds, thinking together about where we have been, where we are now, and where we are going. To learn more about truth, healing and reconciliation, read the 11-page Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Respectfully,

Dr. Pius Ryan
