North Vancouver Parents Advisory Committee (NVPAC): The Other People – February 11

Please join the NVPAC Anti Racism Advisory Committee and The Other People for an interactive evening helping to develop cultural competence in engaging with the challenging issue of hate and racism in Canada. The event takes place on February 11, beginning at 6:45 p.m., located in the theatre at Sutherland Secondary. With rising concerns of inequity around cultures and the BIPOC community it's important to provide information and engagement on minimizing and eradicating discrimination of all types. Building a sense of understanding comes from both the home and school environment. All adults in our community that engage with the student population need to have a sense of understanding of how the affects of discrimination instill in our children. Understanding brings compassion that allows us to provide a strong and safe community for everyone.

This presentation is for current NVSD families and staff. Register through Eventbrite to secure your ticket.

Substance Use Prevention, Part 2: Mental Health & Decisions Making Information Sessions

The Ministry of Education and Child Care, in partnership with adolescent clinical psychologist Dr. Hayley Watson from Open Parachute, will host three, free virtual sessions for parents, guardians and caregivers that will focus on practical skills you can teach your child and youth (ages 0-19) to prevent substance use and mental health needs. The previous session is not a pre-requisite for this session.

Key takeaways for participants during this session:

  • Focus on prevention rather than intervention/response
  • Applies to parents, guardians and caregivers of all age groups (youth aged 0-5, 6-10, and 11-18)
  • Learn ways that these skills can be applied to yourself and the rest of your family to support the mental health of parents, guardians and caregivers
