Standing Committee Meeting – November 5

A Board of Education Standing Committee Meeting takes place on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. and will discuss Truth, Healing and Reconciliation. Visit our Public Meetings web page for information on how you can participate and to review the meeting agenda, which is posted on the Thursday afternoon preceding the public meeting.

Public Board Meeting – November 19

Digital Media Expo – December 7

The Digital Media Youth Expo is an annual event hosted by the school district’s Digital Media Academy (DMA). Students, families, staff and community members will meet representatives from many Lower Mainland post-secondary institutions, local and global organizations, industry experts and studios involved in all aspects of digital media. Representatives from visual effects, animation, film, sound, web design, game design and DMA students will be in attendance to answer industry, education and career-related questions; DMA students will also showcase the projects they are working on.

The Expo takes place on Saturday, December 7, from 12 noon to 3 p.m., and is free to attend. More information is available on the Digital Media Youth Expo website.

Playhouse – Exhibition open

The Gordon Smith Gallery and Artists for Kids invites you to experience Playhouse. The exhibition features artworks from over 20 Canadian artists and presents the Gordon Smith Gallery as a place to hear stories, meet characters, and transform the spaces we inhabit in order to unveil unseen narratives. The exhibition sets the stage for us to consider ways in which the physical, social, cultural, and imagined qualities of a place are intertwined. Visit Artists for Kids for more information.

Art Education, for Life Speaker Series at the Gordon Smith Gallery

A Lens for Discovery: Altered States, Transcendence and Belief — November 4
North Vancouver-born and Berlin-based artist Jeremy Shaw sits down with Andrew Booth to delve into the role that early exposure to quality art education had in building alternative perspectives on visual media from a young age. A former student of Artists for Kids, Shaw now works in a variety of media to create a post-documentary space to dissect and assemble disparate belief systems and counter-histories.

Artful Minds, Scientific Insights — November 23
Dr. Maiya Geddes, assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University will be in conversation with Dr. Randy McIntosh, Professor at SFU and Director of the Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology, exploring the intricate relationship between art and neuroscience. Geddes will delve into the neural mechanisms shaping creativity and aesthetic experiences, unraveling the mysteries of the mind at the crossroads of artistic expression and cognitive processes.

Explore and Create Saturday Art Program — November 2, 9, 30

Families with children ages 5–12 are invited to the Gordon Smith Gallery on Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m., for drop-in art activities inspired by works in the new exhibition, Playhouse. Participation is by donation. Parent or guardian supervision is required. Visit Public Programs for more information.

 


 

NVSD Registrations

2024/25 Kindergarten – Registration open

Initial registration for 2024/25 Kindergarten (children born in 2020) is open and continues until Monday, January 6, 2025. Applications submitted within this time frame are processed equally and placed according to initial placement category groups. Information regarding the registration process is available on the Kindergarten Registration web page.

Advanced Placement Exams — Register by November 1

Handsworth and Sutherland are offering a range of AP exams for self-study students in May 2025. The deadline to register and remit payment is Friday, November 1. Visit the Advanced Placement web page for more information.

North Vancouver Online Learning – Online registration open

NVOL provides engaging, accessible and interactive learning experiences for students. Students can enrol any time during the school year and have one calendar year to complete their course. Students can also choose to engage in their NVOL courses entirely remotely online or in a blended model of online and in-person interactions at our NVOL Centre.

Visit the NVOL website to see our full suite of courses from Grades 8 through 12 in both English and French. The French Immersion online course offerings allow students the opportunity to meet the requirements of their Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires en Colombie-Britannique online through L' École Virtuelle de Vancouver nord.

 


 

Additional Information and Opportunities

Student Sub-Committee Opportunity

The Student Inclusive Education Committee is a sub-committee of the school district’s Inclusion Committee and was created in 2022. The sub-committee provides an opportunity for neurodivergent students, students with disabilities, autistic students and students with intellectual disabilities to share their experiences and perspectives.

Participation is open to students in Grades 6-12. All students have the option to attend meetings with the support of a family member, peer or support person. The sub-committee meeting locations and schedule will be determined with the participants.

If your student would like to participate on this sub-committee for the 2024-2025 school year, please email, InclusiveEducation@sd44.ca and provide the student’s name, school, grade, and contact information. The number of sub-committee participants will depend on the number of applicants.

Supporting Nature and Biodiversity at Home — November 6

Join the District of North Vancouver for an inspiring event where you’ll discover how to boost nature and biodiversity in your backyard at Lynn Valley Library. Come early for light refreshments. This event will be a fun evening with engaging conversations with panelists and interactive activities. Register to save your spot!

Centennial Theatre presents Bear Grease — November 8

The musical Grease with an Indigenous twist! Bear Grease takes the hit musical Grease on an Indigenous joyride with fashion that slays, humour that tickles your funny bone and music that makes you groove. Buckle up for an electrifying experience that celebrates Indigenous cultures and dances its way into your heart. It's a one-of-a-kind adventure you don't want to miss. Bear Grease takes place on Friday, November 8, from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Recommendation age 12 & over. Buy tickets online.

Canadian Dental Care Plan

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) helps cover the cost of several oral health care services that can help keep your children’s teeth and gums healthy. This includes services such as examinations, cleanings, fluoride application and sealants, and restorative work (fillings). Applications for the CDCP are now open for children under 18—find out if your child is eligible and apply today at Canada.ca/dental.

KidSport

KidSport envisions communities where all children have the opportunity to participate in sport. They support children who need financial assistance with sport registration fees and equipment costs. Through a confidential application process, KidSport provides grants up to $600 per child per year to eligible families. Visit the KidSport North Shore chapter website for more information.
