About the Outdoor Education Academy
Beginning in September 2018, the North Vancouver School District (NVSD) formed a partnership with Outward Bound Canada (OBC) to offer the Outdoor Education Academy at Sutherland Secondary School. This Academy is open to all students who will be in grade 10 for the 2019-2020 school year.
The program consists of an Outdoor Learning and Environmental Stewardship curriculum as set out by OBC and NVSD and is in compliance with the BC Ministry of Education Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Physical and Health Education 10, Outdoor Education 10 and 11 and the required curricular competencies and standards of English 10 and Socials Studies 10. Some cross curricular Science and Math will also be included.
Application to the program requires students to transfer
The OEA will take students out of the classroom and into nature. It will provide hands-on experiential learning that will erode the traditional boundaries between subject areas and offer interdisciplinary learning in the outdoors. Throughout the school-year, students will take part in a wide variety of outdoor endeavours that are both day trips and overnight stays.
One Integrated Semester of extensive outdoor learning will occur. Approximately half of this semester will be in the field and half will be classroom based. Overnight excursions will take place during this semester. The other semester called the Block Semester will provide Science 10, Math 10, a Language 10 and Outdoor Learning 11.
Please note: transportation to and from the Academy is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

If necessary, student selection for the Outdoor Education Academy will be determined by a lottery in a manner consistent with the School District Policy 605. Eligible students not selected will be placed on a waitlist.
