About the Basketball Academy
Since September 2014, The North Vancouver School District has partnered with Basketball BC to provide its students with the best basketball skill development program in British Columbia. Under Chris Weimer, head coach, Capilano University Women’s Basketball, academy coaches lead students from North Vancouver Schools through a fast paced, high energy, developmental and high performance basketball curriculum. The strength of this academy lies in our coaches and their ability to motivate and push student-athletes to be human-beings of integrity and high-character, while reaching their highest potential as basketball players.
The program consists of the Basketball
Academy curriculum as set out by Basketball BC and the Physical and
Health Education curriculum established by the B.C Ministry of
Education. Students earn their grade level P.H.E. credit upon successful
completion of the program.
Who can Participate?
The Basketball Academy is open to students in Grades 8-12.
Participation in the academy will not affect a student's eligibility to play for their home school's basketball team.
Streams
The Basketball Academy consists of two cohorts:
Cohort 1 - Competitive Stream
Cohort 2 - Academy Stream
Placement
Students will be placed in the Academy or Competitive Streams
based on school and community team experience.
Cohort 1 - Competitive Stream
The competitive stream is open to all grades including grade 8, and requires a try out. Returning students must try out every year. The best players are selected for competitive stream regardless of home school or grade.
Cohort 2 - Academy Stream
The total number of spots available in the program
depends on the number of returning students, the number of applications
received, and the ability of schools to organize the school timetable to
meet enrolment and programming requirements.
Priority 1: Returning students
Priority 2: Wait-listed students from the previous year
Priority 3: Lottery for remaining students consistent with Board Policy 605: Admission of Students to Schools
