In schools across Canada, the end of September is highlighted by the pitter-patter of feet on trails, fields, paths, sidewalks and streets surrounding schools. Terry Fox Runs are incredibly popular school events that demonstrate the social mindedness and passion students have for helping others.

This year, students at Handsworth Secondary School stepped-up their efforts by taking part in the Be Like Terry program. The program creates a student leadership group, which then undertakes a campaign for five weeks to support the school's Terry Fox Run. The leadership group at Handsworth Secondary consisted of roughly 10 students who did a variety of promotional and fundraising events, such as dedication boards, online fundraising and presenting to every class.

The school also partnered with BlueShore Financial, that offered to match fundraising dollars above $1,000 to a maximum of $4,000.

"We really appreciate BlueShore matching our fundraising. It is such a great opportunity they gave us," said Caitlin Mollison, a grade 11 student and one of the student organizers of the school's Terry Fox Run.

The school established a fundraising goal of $5,000.

"Cancer touches everyone in some way, so the entire school was happy to support this cause," said Mollison.

Handsworth Secondary easily surpassed its fundraising goal. With BlueShore Financial's matching opportunity, they raised $6659.60 for cancer research.
