Career fair in TV/film, theatre and broadcasting

By Jennifer Kinakin, District Career Coordinator

It was showtime once again this fall when 60 students from Carson Graham, Handsworth, Argyle and Sutherland Secondary Schools walked through the doors of the Education Services Centre for the sequel to last year’s career fair.

Taking the lead roles of keynote speakers were award-winning CTV News Reporter and Producer Shannon Paterson, Acting Agent Yvonne Gustafson, and Actor Marc-Anthony Messiah of Connekt Creative. Each speaker inspired students by talking about their career paths while also highlighting the important skills and aptitudes needed for work in the industry, including drive, adaptability, grit and willingness to keep learning.

Assuming the roles of the supporting actors were representatives from Capilano University’s Motion Picture Arts and Recruiting, as well as Costume Design; BCIT’s Television and Video Production Program and Broadcast and Media Communications Program; Ourwork BC (the union that represents all who work in the film industry); SFU’s Interactive Arts and Technology and School for the Contemporary Arts; Langara’s Studio 58; and Creative BC, who recently launched Creative Pathways BC, a site that outlines all career paths in the industry.

Using a round-robin model, students spent time at each booth gaining valuable insight into the industry and learning about program options, course offerings, admission requirements, and employment opportunities.

Students were pleasantly surprised to learn they can be a part of this booming industry even if they have no aspirations of being on set. Yuri J. from Handsworth shared, “The fair was an informative and fun experience filled with like-minded students. I am incredibly glad I was able to inquire about the programs and application processes of the schools I'm currently considering, whilst also learning more about the industry.”

Students weren’t the only ones offering rave reviews for this year’s fair. Rob Walker, representing Carson Graham’s Fine Arts, Drama & Theatre Production, noted, "It was important to hear from both post-secondary and industry that the common theme is initiative and personal resilience. There are amazing opportunities to create your future once you take the brave step of investing in your vision of a future. "

And while the Oscar is shared with all students who were brave enough to ask questions and take time out of their busy school schedules to explore careers in this industry, a sincere thanks goes out to all industry representatives who made the fair possible.

As Katie A., Handsworth student said, “I am very grateful for those who took the time out of their day to share their experiences and teach the rest of the group about the different programs. Everything about the event was great, and I am glad that I went because it will help me decide where to apply to.”
