The Great BC Shakeout at Lynn Valley Elementary

By Kendra Arkinstall, Vice Principal and Learning Services Teacher

Lynn Valley Elementary participated in the 2021 Great British Columbia ShakeOut!

The main goal of ShakeOut BC is to help schools prepare for a major earthquake, and this drill provided students and staff with a great opportunity to learn and practice what to do before, during and after an earthquake.

Throughout October, students practiced how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On,” so when the drill happened on October 21 and the earthquake recording was announced, students knew exactly what to do to stay focused, calm and safe.

During the drill, our 16 divisions stayed in their designated place and counted to 60, giving time for teachers to make sure the surroundings were safe. After the 60-second count, the drill was over, and teachers debriefed with their students.

A special thank you to Lynn Valley’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) for ensuring our school is well equipped with emergency grab and go kits in each classroom.
