By Jennifer Kinakin, Volleyball and Field Hockey Academy Teacher/Career Co-ordinator, Sutherland Secondary At the early hour of 6:30 a.m., NVSD Volleyball Academy students at Sutherland were roused by enthusiastic and engaging self-defense instructors James and Louisa of Hit and Run Self Defense. James and Louisa offered a fun and empowering session on Nov. 22 that provided students with street smart awareness and prevention strategies, knowledge of key targets, striking position and verbal and avoidance skills.
This exercise proved to be a very interactive way to meet PHE curricular objectives, by providing tactics to avoid and/or respond to potentially unsafe, abusive or exploitative situations. All Grade 8s at Sutherland will be taking the self-defense session. What a great way to start a day!
