Carson students get sizzling lesson and job offers

By Holly Castle, Work Experience Facilitator, Carson Graham Secondary

Close to 120 Carson Graham Secondary students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 were provided with a culinary experience like no other last week: A hands-on, interactive presentation from one of the best in the industry, Josh Campanaro, Regional Chef at Joey Restaurant Group.

Students were provided insight into the lucrative career path that Josh discovered with Joey's. He started 16 years ago with humble beginnings as a dishwasher and, with time, Josh worked his way up the ranks to become a certified Red Seal chef (courtesy of Joey's in-house apprenticeship program). Josh has since proudly earned the title of head Regional Chef.

During Josh's interactive visit, students were given an overview of the culinary opportunities available, as well as an opportunity to make one of Joey's signature menu items: Seared Salmon Sushi.

Students eagerly volunteered for their chance to use the culinary tools, work with fresh ingredients, and complete their sushi dishes plating them to perfection, à la Joey's style!

The take-away was clear: Students were actively engaged, and look forward to pursuing careers in the restaurant industry.

Many thanks to Foods teachers Brad Thornhill and Liana Li for working with me, and offering to open up their classrooms to welcome not only their own students, but all Carson students who expressed a passion in attending Josh's presentation.

The renderings for Joey Shipyards, set to open in January 2020 on the Lonsdale waterfront, look phenomenal.

We look forward to a continued partnership with the team at Joey's. Josh complemented his visit by offering any interested students a followup call and scheduled interview at Joey Shipyards.

Since his visit, many Carson students are actively interviewing for positions within the company, and some have already been hired!

Joey's is keen to support local teens with employment opportunities, and is welcoming any future students to reach out to Josh directly with inquires at:

Proud to support another fantastic student opportunity!
