The formal yet personal celebration occurred in the early evening of Monday, March 11, 2019, where staff members were celebrated and acknowledged for their years of service in front of family and staff from across the district. The traditional Indigenous welcome was provided by Dallas Gus (Swalklanexw), NVSD cultural support worker from the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

To kick off the event, guests were entertained by the amazing acoustic performance from Sutherland Secondary students Claire Watts (vocals) and Bella Martin (guitar).

Mark Pearmain, Superintendent, thanked the group for their years of service on behalf of the Board of Education and Executive Committee: “We live in a world where the work that you do in supporting the education of each child is becoming more critically important…Many of our students from the NVSD are involved with humanitarian efforts. They are fundraising and raising awareness of some of the biggest social justice issues right now. Serving others is a focus, and that is due in part to the example you are setting for them to be good global citizens.”

“Students (and staff) take part in these activities because of the values within the NVSD – that you live by and reinforce each day. It is important to know that your part in creating a just and tolerant society is important regardless if you are an EA, Office Assistant, Custodian, Teacher, Principal or Exempt staff.”
