Student Leadership Council operates as the student government at Sutherland Secondary. With at least 6 grade reps per grade, the council has a mandate to organize grade and school events to promote a sense of belonging; to create a sense of spirit and fun for the student body; to encourage good relations between students and staff; to reach out to local and global communities through our volunteer participation in fundraising and relief efforts; and to enliven our school environment through strong mentoring and leadership.
In may of each year, students at all grade levels are encouraged to apply to join SLC. There is an application process requiring teacher references which must be completed by advertised deadlines. SLC welcomes new and returing members each year. Those students fulfilling the requirements are asked to attend a half-day retreat in early June, and a two-day, overnight retreat in September, to build unity and group cohesion and to plan the upcoming year.
SLC meets every Wednesday at noon, and all members are expected to attend meetings, sit on organizing committees and assist with school activities.
