Overview

The Elementary Band Program offers intermediate students an opportunity to learn how to play a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. The program is open to students in grades 5, 6 and 7. Prior instrumental music experience is not required before joining the band program. The following information outlines various aspects of the program and introduces the instruments of the concert band.

Curriculum

Basic instrumental skills are taught which include tone production and fingerings. Music reading skills are taught which include basic terminology like clefs, note names, time signatures, rhythm values, and dynamics. Students who master these skills are well prepared to play in a high school band program. The program method book includes a CD and a DVD to promote skill development through home practice. Playing along with the CD also makes home practice fun.

Rehearsals

Classes are held twice each week at the school. Usually one class is scheduled during the school day at a time that is agreed upon by the administration and the classroom teacher. One class is scheduled outside of the normal school day, usually before school, but in some cases during a portion of recess or the lunch hour.

Concerts

Typically there are three concerts during the school year. Two concerts are held at the elementary school and one concert is held at the high school. Other concerts may be scheduled as opportunities arise.

Beginning band students are able to play many simple melodies by the end of the first term. They are able to play concert pieces from sheet music by the end of the first year.

Success in Band

Success on an instrument requires about 15 minutes of thoughtful practice each day. Practice should be fun especially when playing along with the CD. Practice leads to skill and skill leads to a sense of accomplishment for the student.
