Congratulations to Sutherland Secondary School student, Sarah Allen (Sahar Sajjadi), who was recently named one of the 2016/17 recipients of the TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership, for making a meaningful and lasting difference in her community.

On Thursday, June 1, 2017, Sarah travelled back east to accept the award along with the fellow recipients.

Each year, the TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership receive approximately 3,500 – 4,000 applications for the $70,000 scholarship.

Recipients of the scholarship are young Canadians from across the country who have positively impacted their communities and share one common belief; that one person can indeed make a difference in their communities.

As a recent newcomer to Canada eager to adapt to the local culture, Sarah immersed herself within the community and joined local activities and initiatives that she was passionate about. After volunteering on youth health and science committees, Sarah spearheaded the creation of two new clubs to encourage student pride in their talents and multicultural backgrounds.

Sarah founded and created The Rhythm Club, where participants demonstrate their music and dance skills while fundraising for BC Children's Hospital Foundation. She also created the New2Canada Club, which features events designed to enhance young people's leadership and communication skills, planned by newcomer youth.

Sarah plans to study science at the University of British Columbia with the goal of a career as a neurologist or neurosurgeon.

Congratulations, Sarah! On behalf of the North Vancouver School District, we wish you the best in your future endeavors.
